MBA in Finance

The MBA with specialization in Finance trains managers to develop an analytical expertise specifically focused in the area of finance. The program is designed for students to develop the skills, knowledge and experience necessary for a career in this field. Graduates will be well positioned for careers as financial managers or investment bankers.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants holding any recognized undergraduate degree will be considered for admission to this program. Admission to the MBA (Finance) program is based on the applicant’s undergraduate grades, three letters of reference, a statement of purpose explaining how this program relates to the applicant’s career goals, and the Graduate Management Admission Test score. For candidates interested in this program, a minimum of two years’ full-time work experience is desired. A resume outlining past work experience is required as part of the application materials.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 60 units in coursework, including a 3-unit capping exercise.

Students in the MBA with Specialization in Finance fulfill the GPS Professional Development Requirement through their program.

Length of Program

Students enrolled in this program on a full-time basis can complete it in two calendar years. Alternatively, this course-based MBA program may be taken on a part-time basis.

The maximum time to complete the course-based MBA program as set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is six years.

Awards and Scholarships

The Alberta MBA program makes every effort to ensure that academically strong students and those in need receive financial support. Last year, over $1 million was available to MBA students in the form of entrance awards, scholarships, and bursaries. Every year, a majority of full-time students admitted to the MBA program receive some form of financial support.

Entrance Awards

All students admitted to the Alberta MBA are automatically considered for entrance awards. These awards are based upon the MBA admission criteria. We do not require separate applications to consider you for an entrance award. Entrance awards range in value up to $15,000.

Scholarships

Unlike entrance awards, scholarships are usually awarded to students during the MBA program. The exact criteria for each scholarship are different, but scholarships are typically designed to recognize excellence both academically and outside of the classroom. For any scholarships that require an application, we will solicit applications directly from students.

Bursaries

Financial support in the form of MBA Differential Bursaries are available to students. These bursaries are awarded based on residential status and demonstrated financial need. Bursaries are typically awarded to students entering the MBA program, with MBA-specific supplementary bursaries awarded during the program. In addition to bursaries provided through the School of Business, MBA students are eligible to apply for University-wide supplementary bursaries that are funded through private donors and the University of Alberta.

Scholarships & Awards

There are a variety of scholarships and awards available to both Canadian and international students. Canadian students with outstanding academic records are encouraged to apply for federal and provincial government awards. Foreign students are encouraged to apply for awards from their home countries that may be used for foreign study. Be sure to read all application instructions carefully and submit your application by the appropriate deadline.

NSERC Top-ups

Any student who wins a Tri-Council scholarship at the U of A (NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR) gets an automatic “top-up” from FGSR.

Master’s Tri-Council winners: Walter H. Johns Grad Fellowship (FGSR)

An amount equivalent to tuition and fees for one year (as determined by the date of admission to the student’s program) is paid directly to the student.
This top-up award is processed upon activation of the NSERC award and paid out in September. Thus, no action is required from the students other than the submission of their NSERC Payment Activation Form (to activate their NSERC award).

Doctoral Tri-Council winners: President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction (FGSR)

$10,000 in the first year that the student holds the NSERC award.
An amount equivalent to tuition and fees for the Fall and Winter terms in subsequent years that the student holds the NSERC award.
This top-up award is processed upon activation of the NSERC award and paid out in September. Thus, no action is required from the students other than submission of their NSERC Payment Activation Form (to activate their NSERC award).

Faculty of Science Graduate Scholarship

$2000 one-time award for students entering our program.

AITF Top-ups

NSERC, Vanier, China Scholarship Council and other external peer-reviewed award holders who win an AITF Graduate Student Scholarship will receive an automatic top-up for the duration of their eligibility ($12 000), and this top-up value may increase to the full scholarship value when the external funding ends, for the remainder of the AITF scholarship terms.

In order to receive an AITF top-up, students need to apply to the full AITF Scholarship Competition. If they do not apply, they will not receive the AITF top-up even if they get an NSERC.

Outstanding Students From China

The China Scholarship Council and the University of Alberta have signed a collaborative co-funding agreement for sponsoring up to 10 doctoral students to study at the University of Alberta. Please visit Funding Information for International Students on the FGSR webpage for more details.
