Aerospace science and engineering is a cross-disciplinary and multidisciplinary field that allows exploration of the broadest and most fascinating fields of engineering, areas that capture the imagination and encourage exploration beyond our terrestrial existence. The University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) is Canada’s leader for education and research in aerospace engineering, focusing on the technical fields needed to design aircraft and spacecraft. Faculty perform research in the following areas:
Aeronautics: Aircraft design, systems, and control
Experimental methods: Laser diagnostics, structural/material analysis, field testing of robotics and aircraft
Flight simulation: Full motion-based flight simulation with virtual reality capability
Fluid dynamics: Flow of gasses over aircraft and in engines
Numerical methods: Computer modeling for fluid flows, structures, design, and optimization
Orbital mechanics: Satellite/spacecraft dynamics and control
Propulsion systems: Jet and rocket engines, turbomachinery, combustion science
Robotics and autonomous systems: Ground, air and space-based systems
Spacecraft design and construction: Design, construction, and launch of satellites
Structures and materials: Structural design and optimization, material testing.
Much of this research falls into three main themes:
Reducing the environmental impact of aviation
Aerial robotics, drones and unmanned aerial vehicles
Autonomous systems for space exploration.
All Courses
The Master of Applied Science (MASc) degree is a research-based program focused on the completion of a research thesis. The MASc is considered to provide basic training in research for students subsequent to an undergraduate program. Under the direction of a faculty supervisor, students will select a research topic, perform experiments, computation, or analysis relevant to the topic, and report their results in a thesis. Upon completion of the thesis, students will be prepared for further academic research or employment in industry, including in research and development settings. Top students may have the opportunity to transfer directly to the PhD program after their first year of MASc studies.
Minimum Admission Requirements
Applicants are admitted under the General Regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Applicants must also satisfy UTIAS’s additional admission requirements stated below.
An appropriate four-year undergraduate degree in in engineering, mathematics, physics, or chemistry from a recognized university.
Completion Requirements
Coursework to be completed in Year 1. Students must complete a minimum of 2.5 full-course equivalents (FCEs) (five half courses) as follows:
All courses must be technical.
At least half of the required FCEs must be courses offered at UTIAS.
Complete AER1800H Research Seminar in Aerospace Science and Engineering.
Students must achieve at least a B– average to be in good academic standing. Failure in any course taken for credit may result in termination of the student’s registration.
Students deemed to have insufficient background may be required to complete supplementary coursework in addition to the required 2.5 FCEs.
Complete the non-credit course JDE1000H Ethics in Research.
Attend a total of 12 approved seminars.
Have research performance assessed by a Research Assessment Committee (RAC), which includes the student’s supervisor. For students making excellent research progress, the RAC may recommend that a student be considered for direct transfer to the PhD program.
Write a thesis based on research performed during the period of registration for the MASc based on a topic selected in consultation with the student’s supervisor.
Present a seminar on the student’s research at the UTIAS Departmental MASc Seminar (DMS).

Student awards (scholarships and grants) are non-repayable monetary awards issued based on criteria such as merit, financial need, community engagement, leadership and athletic performance.
What is an Award, Grant, and Scholarship?
Award: An award can be a scholarship, fellowship, prize, grant or bursary.
Grant: A monetary award based primarily on financial need. Sometimes “grant” and “bursary” are used interchangeably, but “grant” is the more common term used at U of T.
Scholarship: A monetary award based on academic excellence alone or in combination with financial need.
Thousands of non-repayable awards worth more than $100 million are available annually, based on merit, financial need, or a combination of both.

Students are automatically considered for a variety of admission awards when they apply to U of T. There are also admission awards that require students to complete a separate application or awards profile.

Award Explorer
The Award Explorer is a centralized, searchable database of thousands of awards from admissions to in-course and graduating awards. The database hold awards that are funded by the academic divisions, colleges, as well as awards that are centrally funded by the university as a whole. This tool can help you explore the diverse funding opportunities available to you. Most of our scholarships are awarded to multiple recipients. You can apply for as many awards as you like, and most awards can be combined with each other.
International Student Aid
As a publicly funded institution, the University of Toronto is not able to offer direct financial aid to international students. You should look to your home country for financial aid programs and determine if you qualify for assistance.
Studying in Canada
Please be aware that before issuing a Study Permit, the Government of Canada requires that international students provide proof of financial support(external link)—to show that you are able to support yourself while in Canada.
Students studying at a Canadian university on a Study Permit are not eligible for financial assistance from Canadian government programs. We recommend that you consult with the funding agencies in your own country. Please note that documented protected persons or convention refugees are able to apply for Canadian government funding.
Scholarships and Student Awards
All students, including international students, are automatically considered for scholarships upon admission. Scholarships and entrance awards for international students are limited and competitive, due to the number of excellent students that apply to U of T. Please note that most scholarships and awards for international students do not cover the full cost of tuition. It is best to have other funding plans in place as well. International Students
The majority of our admission scholarships for international undergraduate applicants are automatically awarded as a part of the admissions review process. The two major admission awards are the University of Toronto Scholars Program and President’s Scholars of Excellence Program. No separate application is required as they are merit-based. Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship
International secondary applicants may also be considered for the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship program if nominated by their high school. This scholarship program is intended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement who are recognized as leaders within their school.

International Merit Admission Award
Offered upon admission to selected international students in the Faculty of Arts & Science(external link) on the basis of merit. Students are automatically considered for this award, which is valued at up to $50,000 over four consecutive years, or until degree completion, whichever comes first (up to $20,000 in the first year and renewable for $10,000 in the second, third and fourth years). This award is not renewable for students admitted to the Faculty of Arts & Science prior to 2023.

How much does it cost to study at U of T?
Your university fees consist of tuition, incidental and ancillary fees, and are based on several factors. In addition, you’ll want to consider other costs such as books, supplies, residence, transportation, food and other expenses.
How do I apply for Financial Aid?
If you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, there are many sources of financial aid available to help you cover the costs of your University of Toronto education – from OSAP and other government aid, to assistance provided by the University. Explore your options.
If you are an international applicant, you should find out about your home country’s financial aid programs to see if you qualify for assistance. The University of Toronto is a publicly-funded institution and because of that cannot offer financial aid to international students.

Submit your OSAP application, then print and sign the consents and declaration pages – and any other required supporting documentation – and upload to your account on the OSAP website.
Follow the instructions provided to complete your online Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement (MSFAA) with the National Student Loan Service Centre.
If you are a returning applicant you may not need to submit any documentation.

How do I apply for Scholarships?
Eligible high school students are automatically considered for a variety of admission scholarships when they apply to the University. There are also admissions scholarships that require a separate application, and others that require you to complete an awards profile.
Note, however, that the value of scholarships is rarely sufficient to cover all costs the student will incur while attending University of Toronto.
